During the COVID-19 pandemic, our behaviors have drastically changed. There are now strong needs for activities to be non-contact or non-face-to-face. Technologies that enable these activities are in use in many different working and living situations. Among them, the metaverse technologies are remarkable. The metaverse is a concept that represents a virtual world on the Internet. Transcending space, time and distance, they have the potential to be game changing in a way that is unthinkable from the perspective of conventional thinking.

The metaverse is already spreading. Leveraging non-contact and non-face-to-face technologies, use of the metaverse is becoming more common in the domains of tourism, events and business. Traditionally, what has been called a virtual space has been mainly used to simulate experiences that are complete within the virtual world. For the metaverse, the extent of the connection between the virtual world and the real world is important. The metaverse is characterized by actions in a virtual space having some impact on the real world. For example, suppose that your avatar purchases a product in a department store or other places, watches a movie or participate in an event in a town in a virtual space that copies a real town. That leads to your purchases or experiences in the real world.

This is realized by advancements in the technologies behind the metaverse, such as technologies for remotely reproducing the five senses and image processing technologies that integrate the real world with virtual spaces. This means that movements and actions in virtual spaces have become closer to those in the real world. It was unimaginable 10 years ago that experiences in the real world could be offered in virtual spaces. Ten years from now, we will have realized things that are far beyond our imaginations following the progress of technology which continues to accelerate. It is what is sought because consumers and society want it. Engineers can create a world like this.

I believe that the greatest pleasure for Meitec engineers is increasing the satisfaction of customers in the manufacturing sector and further enriching and helping society using the technologies that they have developed. For this purpose, it is vital to always aspire to achieve something, and to think about the way to achieve it. It is also important to imagine whether or not your job will lead to increased customer satisfaction and contribute to society. Think about it deeply and continue to strive not merely to solve problems but to provide new value that will increase the satisfaction of customers and society.
