Many companies took part in CEATEC JAPAN 2018, which was held in mid-October under the theme “Connecting Society, Co-Creating the Future.” In fact, the average number of visitors per day was the fifth largest in the exhibition’s history. CEATEC JAPAN has been known as an international consumer electronics exhibition, but since 2016 made a dramatic shift into a comprehensive exhibition of IoT, the concept where all manner of things are connected to the network. Since then, the number of new exhibitors from various business categories and industries has increased year after year, and this year’s exhibition showcased many examples of specific proposals on services aimed at achieving Super Smart Society through cross-industrial collaboration and co-creation.
Even in the automotive industry, recently we have seen rapid growth in alliances across industries in an effort to bring about Mobility as a Service, or MaaS. To be the first to build a MaaS platform, companies are developing next-generation mobility and pursuing research into services that can provide various goods and things to be people who need them, when they need them.
Until now, the work of MEITEC engineers has been categorized according to technologies and knowledge in specialist fields such as mechanical engineering, electrical and electronics, control, telecommunications and chemistry. Moving forward, however, unless we move beyond the bounds of these conventional fields to combine them and acquire those multidisciplinary skills, we may no longer be able to handle the development of next-generation products and services that will create Super Smart Society.
As stated in Article 1 of the Meitec Group Charter of Employee Behavior, in order to meet the needs of a changing world we need to fully utilize the expertise we have acquired to date as we strive for career development and work to increase our market value. Moreover, to increase the customer satisfaction described in Article 2, we have to combine technical prowess and human drive to constantly earn the trust of our customers. And, as long as our customers continue working hard towards the development of society throughout the world, we ourselves must keep abreast of the times as we take on the challenge of change and contribute as much as possible to the realization of Super Smart Society.
What will the world be like ten years from now?
When I think about what will have changed in the world in ten years’ time, I imagine everything will have progressed even further and the world will be smarter and more convenient than you could imagine. Machines and robots will have taken over a lot of work, while people will be tasked with the creative work of which only humans are capable. We will consider and explore ways to maximize productivity and efficiency, make full use of our limited time, and better enrich our daily lives.
I would like to keep creating that a future together with you.
